From post-war era to the twenty-first century, building designs have always been about maximizing usable space in Hong Kong. When the city ran out of land, skyscrapers filled up the old neighbourhood. When people live closer and closer to the sky, the property value follows and hence the Cantonese idiom "寸金尺土," literally means "an inch of gold for a foot of land."
